DECCA COMPETITION / REDEFINING THE STANDARD

In many cultures when formally introducing yourself it is understood to be good etiquette to bring a gift.

Etiquette considered. This custom furniture collection and room design has been inspired to celebrate key historical ideals of the Western culture through design. I have chosen to use subtle Eastern Oriental cultural references while adding complimenting gestures through picture art, materials, color and pattern. This hoping to create a connection and familiarity with the products for both Eastern and Western cultures, appealing to both markets.

BESPOKE FURNITURE

CERAMICS CABINET & SHELVE UNITS

It is generally known that Eastern culture highly regard Ceramics as the West value paintings and precious Art. This understanding was fundamental reason to create a cabinet that would showcase and compliment such ornaments.

Also acknowledging an increase of high-rise living in modern Asian cities, it was important to consider light, and that it would not be obstructed if this furniture were placed against windows, sill maintaining enough transparency minimising both view restrictions and shadows from Cabinets.

The room is designed as a fully functional lounge and reception during the day that could transform into an entertainment space in the evening. The aim was to keep this duel concept, a balance between the two cultures throughout the room using the interiors decoration and furniture design

Rather than contain the concept I have chosen to remove limitations and restrictions by taking away both a partitioning wall and ceiling from the original room, to illustrate a sign of encouragement of both openness and growth.

RPW DESIGN

A unique oriental inspired design is applied to the side panels on each of the ceramics cabinet and storage-shelving units. These panels are a stained glass material allowing the room to benefit from natural daylight.

MINCHAH RATTAN “DINING” CHAIR

This collection, particularly this chair was Inspired by the Lloyd Kotson Japanese Bamboo Masterworks Collection. This Rattan Bamboo weave contains a six-point star as to resemble the Star of David, an important aspect and key symbol referenced in the foundations of Western and Eastern culture. This Minchah Rattan was used as a starting point when designing this classic Georgian style chair, I have also chosen a deep red cherry oak to be used for the frame and royal blue leather suede for the cushioned seat.

BESPOKE CHESS BOARD

This games table was created to subdue the formal use of the room and encourage interaction and socializing through classic games. The decorations include a depiction of The Great wall of China and a watchtower that continues around the furniture. As you can see the table detail has additional Gold Leaf applied to represent the Sun rising. This use of the sun is also complimentary to gold feature at the top of the oriental Ceramics Cabinet.

CLASSIC WORK DESK

Classic Chinnoiserie Work Desk has been redesigned and added to this room to accommodate modern living. Additional redesign features include allocated space for a desktop monitor that is revealed beneath a unique fully fold back desk compartment a feature that allows this desk to be used up against glass windows and several draws for storage.
